Blurring the boundaries between reality, memory and myth, I present characters in my drawings with situations that deal with vulnerability, loss and feelings of displacement, all within a forced climate of tension. Although they are firmly connected with the world around them, their environment and to one another, they are held back by the weight of their circumstances, each condition a struggle.
In enabling these hybrid forms to undergo a process of metamorphosis, I can address questions on history, on culture, family and community.
Inspired by nature and childhood fables, I explore the spaces that exist between two worlds – the mundanity of day to day living and the magic that is awakened through my childhood memories.
My process is one of construction, creating form through repetitive mark making and layering which is informed by photographic self-portraits.
