Statement:
Through my drawings I like to ask questions. Questions about what it is that defines us and how we are connected to one another.
Blurring the boundaries between reality, memory and myth, I present characters in my drawings with situations that deal with loss, vulnerability and feelings of displacement, all within a forced climate of tension. Although they are firmly connected with the world around them, their environment and to one another, they are held back by the weight of their circumstances, each condition a struggle.
In enabling these hybrid forms to undergo a process of metamorphosis, I can address questions on history, on culture, family and the home.
Inspired by nature and childhood fables, I explore the spaces that exist between two worlds - the mundanity of day to day living and the magic that is awakened through my childhood memories.
My process is one of construction, creating form through repetitive mark making and layering which is informed by photographic self-portraits.
The work creates a space where myth meets memory, a crossing of worlds, where fable and experience are one and the same.
